What is an Apprenticeship?

As employees, apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. Off the job, usually on a day-release basis, apprentices receive training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications. Anyone living in England, over 16 and not in full-time education can apply.

Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of Apprenticeship, the apprentice's ability and the industry sector. The minimum salary is £95 a week. However, many apprentices earn significantly more. You could do an Apprenticeship in a variety of trades from bricklaying to hairdressing.

Key benefits:

  • work for an employer earning a salary

  • receive high quality training

Young Apprenticeships:

A 'Young Apprenticeship' is an additional option at Key Stage 4 for young people to follow. You will continue with your core National Curriculum subjects but for 2 days a week you will be working towards a Level 2 vocational qualification, with 50 days work placement with a local employer. Currently only Automotive Engineering is available at Great Sankey High School.
